Cosmetic emulsions
Magnetic emulsion technology is perfectly suited for producing cosmetic and pharmaceutical emulsions, like creams, lotions, milks, ointments, … A wide range of products were already successfully manufactured with M4E technology, both on lab and industrial scale, spanning different types of oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions for various applications. By the end of 2008 we already had 5+ customers producing their cosmetic emulsions and/or gels with our magnetic technology. One of the most important advantages of magnetic emulsion technology is a clear improvement in quality of the products compared to high-shear technology.
The quality of cosmetic and pharmaceutical emulsions is determined by their viscosity, stability and homogeneity. A higher viscosity indicates often a more homogeneous droplet size and distribution. In most cases also an increased viscosity (+ 10 to 30 %) as compared to high-shear is observed. The stability is also often higher in emulsions manufactured with magnetic emulsion technology.
An important disadvantage of high-shear technology is that certain (shear sensitive or heat sensitive) molecules are broken down by the mixers. This is observed for instance with carbomers, polymers that are added to cosmetic products to increase viscosity. Magnetic technology is a very soft technology, with very low shear. As a consequence, no molecules are damaged by the process. This is a very important advantage for use of actives or other shear/heat sensitive compounds.
